The Sailrite Fabric Calculator

BOAT COVERS

Cover Type (?)
The “Quick Winter Boat Cover” process is less expensive, and easier to make than the “Traditional Winter Boat Cover” process. Why is that? Well for one, instead of making boots for a better seal at obstacles, such as stanchions, a simple slit is made in the fabric to allow for obstacles to protrude. Second instead of making zipper flaps, zippers are simply sewn alongside the fabric’s edge which is covered in binding. Be sure to watch the appropriate tutorial video below depending on your selection.
Quick Traditional
Tent to (?)
Extend cover over the lifelines and down to the deck or directly to the deck leaving the lifelines exposed.
Life Lines Rail
A. Length of Cover (?)
Measure the entire length of the boat on the center line over the top of the supporting structure. Seams will run perpendicular to this side of the cover.
Decimals!
B. Skirt Depth (?)
The depth of the cover fabric hanging below the rails or life lines depending upon the "tenting" choice above. This measurement will be be used to create a separate length of fabric attached to the tent section.
Numbers!
Fabric Width (?)
Numbers less than 74 inches!
Panels Required (?)
Total number of panel widths needed for this cover.
Integer!

Tent Width Measurements
Measure the width of the boat "tent" (over the boom or other support structures -- do not include the skirt), the skirt fabric will be calculated separately. This measurement is taken from port to starboard from lifeline to lifeline or rail to rail. The matrix measurements begin at the bow at your selected fabric width (minus 1”) aft from the extreme end of the bow. The finial matrix measurement is taken near the transom of the boat. If some fields are left blank, the calculator will automatically populate those blank fields based on filled field inputs.

Usually only 3 measurements are required at key locations for a rough estimate of fabric & supply requirements (Note: inputting more field measurements will increase calculator accuracy).

Minimal Required Tent Measurements:
1. Width {{data.fabricWidth - 1}} {{data.UofM}} from end of bow location.
2. Width at maximum beam location.
3. Width at transom.
Dura-skrim Patterning Material: Dura-skrim required = {{data.yardsDura}} yards.
There will be {{data.quantityDura}} panel lengths of Dura-skrim pattern material. {{data.DuraLength}} Each panel is also increased in length by {{data.inch * 8}} {{data.UofM}} as a "fudge factor".
{{data.requiredPanelsTextDura}}
Seam allowances = {{data.edgeAllowance * 2}} {{data.UofM}}.
Centering margin = {{data.centering}} {{data.UofM}} -- separation offset= {{data.horizontalSeparation}}.
Boxing width = {{data.boxingWidth}} {{data.UofM}} -- minimum length = {{data.boxingLength}}.an Plaque width = {{data.plaque}} {{data.UofM}} -- minimum length = {{data.plaqueLength}}.

Tent Fabric Panels: Fabric required = {{data.yards}} yards.
There will be {{data.quantity}} panel lengths of fabric. Each panel is increased in length by 2% to allow for possible shrinkage after sewing and by {{data.inch * 10}} {{data.UofM}} to provide a seam allowance for skirt attachment and an overlap on the rails or lifelines.

Skirt Fabric Panels: Fabric required = {{data.yardsSkirt}} yards.
There will be {{data.skirtPanels }} panels {{data.fabricWidth}} x {{data.SkirtAndHem}} {{data.UofM}} wide sewn together edge to edge in a long strip.
{{data.requiredPanelsTextSkirt}}

Boot and Flap Cover Fabric: Fabric required = {{data.yardscrap}} yards.
This fabric will be used to create boots and zipper flap covers. The calculator assumes an additional 15% of the tent fabric total (rounded up).
