The Sailrite Fabric Calculator

Box Cushions

Screen 1 of 2: Answer these questions to create a virtual rendition of the fabric that will be used to nest cushion panels:

Fabric Width (?)
Enter the width of the fabric that will be used to make cushion(s).
Numbers -- fractions as decimals!
Vertical Pattern Match (?)
Leave this field “0” if there is no repeat or pattern matching is not necessary. Fabric patterns sometimes repeat themselves one or more times along the length (running length) of the fabric roll. This repeat, in inches to three decimal places, often listed by fabric manufacture.
Numbers -- fractions as decimals!!
Horizontal Pattern Match (?)
Leave this field “0” if there is no repeat or pattern matching is not necessary. Fabric patterns sometimes repeat themselves one or more times along the width (from selvage edge to selvage edge) of the fabric. This repeat, in inches to three decimal places, often listed by fabric manufacture.
Numbers -- fractions as decimals!!
Enter Desired Finished Cushion Size:
A. Left Side (?)
Enter desired finished width for cushion’s left hand side
Numbers -- fractions as decimals!
{{data.UofM}}
B. Front Side (?)
Enter desired finished length for cushion’s front side.
Numbers -- fractions as decimals!
C. Thickness (?)
Measure the thickness of foam used and enter it here. If batting is included wrap it around the foam, then measure the total thickness, including batting, under slight compression (batting will usually compress to about half of its total thickness).
Numbers -- fractions as decimals!
D. Right Side
(rectangle defaults) (?)
Numbers -- fractions as decimals!
E. Back Side (includes zipper)
(rectangle defaults) (?)
Enter desired finished length for cushion’s back side. This back side is where the zipper will be installed. The default will create a rectangle, a length equal to the front side of the cushion. This default entry can be modified as needed.
Numbers -- fractions as decimals!
F. Diagonal (front right"BD Corner" to back left"AE Corner")
(rectangle defaults) (?)
This field is calculated automatically by the software. If any two sides opposite are the same, it will calculate a default diagonal that makes the pattern symmetrical. If all the entered figures for left, front, right, and back are unequal, a diagonal will default to create an irregular cushion with its lower left corner a right angle (this is useful for creating forepeak cushions). If one set of opposite sides is equal, and adjacent sides have one shorter and one longer side (an example is a keystone cushion) the default diagonal will center the remaining shorter side over the longer one. This default entry can be modified as needed. To enter an alternative diagonal measurement, measure the cushions distance from front right to back left corners (B,D to A,E corners) and enter that measurement in this field.
Numbers -- fractions as decimals!
Boxing Length (?)

Seamed Boxing Strips --- Separate sections of boxing on each side of the cushion which must be seamed together at each corner of the cushion. This selection saves on the overall fabric used, but also makes turning corners more difficult, since the corner seam builds up the bulk of fabric at the corner making it more difficult to sew around the corner when joining the boxing to plates.

Continues Boxing Strip ---- One continuous stirp of boxing which wraps around the left, front and right side of the cushion (this strip will include 4 extra inches in length). The two front corners of the boxing will have no seams, which makes an attractive cushion and also makes sewing the boxing to the plates at each corner much easier. This selection also includes a separate zipper plaque boxing piece which is used at the back of the cushion (this strip will include 10 extra inches in length). This zipper plaque must be sewn to the continuous boxing strip, usually a few inches away from the two back corners on the left and right side of the cushion.
