Wire-Hung Canopy

Width Along Pergola's Main Beam
(fixed canopy coverage) (?)
Intended width of the finished canopy. The canopy is fixed in its dimension across this distance -- it will not fold in this direction. Measure from what will be the fabric's furthest outside edge along the pergola's main beam to what will be the fabric's furthest outside edge on the opposite end of the pergola's main beam.
Decimals!
Length From Pergola's Beam to Beam
(adjustable canopy coverage)(?)
Intended length of the finished canopy. The canopy panels will fold to one side on this dimension. Measure from wire hardware mounting surface on one end of each panel to the opposite hardware mounting surface (Pergolas's main beam to the other main beam on the opposite side of the pergola).
Decimals!
Fabric Width (?)
This is the manufacturer's usable fabric width (weft) from the fabric you have selectded (usually 54", 60" or 69" wide")'
Numbers!
Fabric Type(?)
We recommend using a fabric like Phifertext Plus or Textilene which are tight mesh fabrics that allow water to eventually pass through the fabric. If a water-resistant fabric like Sattler or Sunbrella Marine Grade Fabric is used, common wahser grommets will need to be installed in each span to allow water to escape from canopies.

Retraction/Extraction System(?)
We recommend the Open/Close Rope Pulley System over the Webbing Strap System. Why? Simply use a control line to open and close up to three canopies at once and lock them in place with a cleat. If more than three canopies are required, an additional control line will be used for every three sets. Using the Webbing Strap, you must use a pole with a hook end to open or close each canopy by hand and connect the webbing’s d-ring to a hook secured on the pergola to secure it in place. This method is not as convenient and secure, but it is less expensive than the Open/Close Rope Pulley System. This fabric calculator will add or remove the materials required for the retraction/extraction system you have selected.

Number of Canopies
Along Width Side of Pergola(?)
If selecting “Multiple Canopies” along the width side of your pergola. Depending on the width entry, canopies will be no more than 52 inches each. Building multiple canopies is easier to sew and install, they also retract better than one wide canopy. If “One Wide Canopy” is selected, you may be required to sew multiple fabric panels together and multiple track sections may need to be joined together using the Track Extension Bar Kit. “One Wide Canopy” selection can be no wider than 186”. The fabric calculator will add or remove the materials required for the type of canopy system you have selected.

Canopy Panel Length Too Great: The adjustable coverage length entered above may result in too much sag. This canopy would benefit from segmentation (create two or more shorter segments). We recommend adjustable coverage length of no more than forty feet or so (about 12200 mm) with fewer than 20 collapsing spans.

General Sewing Instructions:
  1. Along the length sides, fold and sew a 3/4-inch hem (the hems will face the underside of the canopy).
  2. Fold the edge on one end of the canopy with a 1/2-inch hem, then hem again at 1 inch and sew ¾ inch from the fold to create a sleeve pocket for Awning Spline Cording.
  3. From the sleeve just created at the end, measure the span amount, listed above, and create a fold at that point. Staple the fold in place.
  4. Sew a stitch ¾ inch from the span fold mark to create a pocket for Awning Spline Cording. Repeat for all span distances until the last sleeve at the end is reached.
  5. Measure to the final span distance fold point on the last end of the canopy, and mark that point. Then measure past that point 1 ½ inches and cut off the excess fabric.
  6. Fold the edge with a 1/2-inch hem, then hem again at 1 inch and sew ¾ inch from the fold to create a sleeve pocket for Awning Spline Cording.
